Guinea pigs, like humans, cannot produce their own vitamin C and must consume it from their diet. Vitamin C is essential for various bodily processes, including collagen production (a component of bones, skin, ligaments, and blood vessels), as well as immune system maintenance. Lack of vitamin C in the diet can lead to deficiency and result in the development of scurvy.
Symptoms of scurvy may include:
• Loss of appetite
• Depression
• Lameness
• Poor coat condition
• Sore joints
• Nasal discharge
Vita-C chews have been formulated to supplement the diet of guinea pigs with a daily dose of stabilised vitamin C to assist in the prevention of deficiencies. They are an excellent addition to any diet not fortified with stabilised vitamin C to prevent deficiency and disease. Vitamin C supplementation is not necessary for guinea pigs that are fed Origins Cavy Diets.
